The Eagles announced they released veteran cornerback, Darius Slay, to save 4.3 million dollars in cap space. Slay later made it public that he will not retire and will look for a new team in free agency starting March 12.
The cornerback market has a lot of demand throughout the league this season. Slay has the potential to add a lot of experience to a cornerback room and for a reasonable price.
Among many teams, the Ravens were a prime example of good offense ruined by bad defense. Although they got better throughout the year, they still finished giving up the second-most passing yards in the league. The Ravens made a strong first-round pick last season with Nate Wiggins who had a great year last season. Lined up opposite of him was more of the liability. Wiggins, as a rookie, was trusted to guard some of the top receivers they played. Still, he only allowed one touchdown in coverage throughout the whole year. To give Wiggins some help, Slay would be a great addition to mentor the rookie along the way.
The Seahawks are another offense-heavy team making them a great candidate to land Darius Slay. Last season, the Seahawks offense was fifth in passing yards, but their defense was ranked middle of the pack in almost every category. Even with people still doubting Geno Smith, this team was close to making the playoffs last year and has the potential to make a run this year, but it starts with a signing like Darius Slay.
The Cardinals could be an emerging team starting this year but they have many holes to fill. The young team has players in their prime and entering their prime and will look to take advantage of that soon. To help with a lot of this development is a good veteran corner who can help them make a playoff run this season, while helping out some of the younger guys on the defensive side of the ball.
When March 12 rolls around, don’t anticipate that it will take long for Slay and a team to agree to terms. He will be needed on a team with a lot of young potential and a team whose defense needs to catch up to their offense’s playing ability.
