After 67 minutes of scoreless hockey, the first goal of game five between the Oilers and Golden Knights was scored. It turned out to be an important one.
This is the second overtime game for these two teams in this second-round series. Game two gave the Oilers a 2-0 series lead after Leon Draisaitl scored in overtime for Edmonton to win 5-4. Going into game five, played in Vegas, the Oilers held a 3-1 series lead and were on the brink of winning their second series this postseason as underdogs.
The game was slow through 50 minutes before the shots started to pick up. The Oilers dominated the shot counter for most of the game until the Golden Knights found some opportunities late, but Stuart Skinner shut them down. Skinner put together back-to-back shutouts between games four and five.
The game came to an end when a scramble for the puck occurred after a save got away from Adin Hill. With a pile up around him, Kasperi Kapanen swatted at the puck a few times and the third one connected. Hill was falling away from the puck and did not stand a chance as it rolled over the goal line.
After their 4-1 series win, the Oilers will face the winner of the Stars and Jets to play in the Western Conference Finals. The Stars lead that series 3-1 and will play in Winnipeg tonight, May 15, with a chance to end that series. After nearing a 3-0 series comeback in the Finals last season, Edmonton stays hopeful for the Stanley Cup.
On the Eastern side, the Maple Leafs put on by far the worst performance by any team in the playoffs this season. A 6-1 loss caused Toronto to trail Florida 3-2 in the series. This was the first road win by either team in the series. Now, the Panthers head home with a chance to end the series in six games and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The final matchup is between Metro Division foes. The Hurricanes currently hold a 3-1 series lead over the Capitals. Washington, who was the second-best scoring team in the regular season, has put up all of six goals over the first four games of this series. Frustration is building for the Eastern Conference one-seeds as they try to keep their hopes alive at home tonight in game five.
