Maybe Nico Harrison had a plan.
The NBA Draft Lottery was held on Monday night, with the Dallas Mavericks receiving the #1 picks – and they had a 1.8% chance to do so.
The Wizards, Jazz and Hornets all had a 14% chance to win the #1 pick this year. The Wizards received the sixth pick, the Jazz are getting the fifth pick, and Charlotte with the fourth pick. This is the second year in a row that a low-odds team has lucked out and gotten the 1st overall pick, as the Hawks had a 3% chance at first last year.
The Mavericks new core should be Cooper Flagg, Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis – with Klay Thompson and Derick Lively adding on to the starting lineup. The loss of Luka does not look as bad now, as Flagg should fill in the lineup nicely with the rest of the Mavericks pieces. Do not let Flagg take away from the fact that there are many other talented players in the draft that will go to other teams like Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, both out of Rutgers.
Otherwise, San Antonio and Philadelphia will continue to add on to their young lineups, as they have the 2nd and 3rd picks respectively. Another interesting fact to note is the Brooklyn Nets have four first-round picks – 8th, 19th, 26th and 27th overall.
In a draft class that is much better than last year, the Mavericks somehow won the number one overall pick with insanely low odds – and now Dallas not only has that first overall pick, but the Dallas Wings of the WNBA also have the first overall pick in the WNBA draft.
