The University of Colorado announced today that head coach Deion Sanders will have an extended contract – the deal is through 2029.
In two seasons for the Buffaloes, Coach Prime’s record is 13-12. Led by him, Colorado had a great season in 2024, going 9-4 despite coming off a 4-8 season in 2023. Although Sanders was helped significantly by his sons Shedeur and Shilo, as well as top draft prospect Travis Hunter, he’s created a culture and an atmosphere that’s refreshing for a university that hasn’t won a bowl game since 2004.
The Buffaloes had a tremendous program in the 1990s, going 7-2 in bowl games during that decade. Since then, they have only won a single bowl game, that of course being in 2004. Since then, over the span of 20 years, they have been to a grand total of four bowl games, and they never won a single one of those.
The most recent bowl game, however, was under Deion Sanders – and something looked a bit different this time around. The Buffaloes left the Pac-12 after Sanders’ first year to enter the Big 12, and their conference record was 7-2 last year. The conference isn’t a total powerhouse like the SEC, but there are still competitive teams like Arizona State and BYU to match up against Colorado.
Although the Buffaloes will lose many key pieces to the NFL Draft like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, they will be spearheaded by one of the most exciting coaches in college football for the next few years.
