Early this morning, the Grousbeck family officially sold the Boston Celtics franchise to Bill Chisholm and a group of firms. The deal was worth $6.1 billion – the largest purchase of a North American sports team ever. It was larger than what the Washington Commanders were bought for, $6.05 billion, sold by Dan Snyder.

In a city like Boston, the price makes a lot of sense. There’s a large history of victory for Celtics fans. Boston has the second-most NBA Finals wins in history with 15, second to the Lakers. Other franchises in different sports could be sold for more than the $6.1 billion the Celtics were bought for, but the record will belong to them until the next big buyout.

Obviously, the purchase doesn’t affect the amazing season the Celtics are having this year – they are second in the East and third in the NBA and are poised for a deep playoff run with one of the best on-paper rosters in the league.

For now, the city of Boston awaits a new era of ownership with optimism, as the franchise’s legacy now belongs to a new group near the end of the 2024-25 regular season.
