Sunday, March 9 erupted with offseason moves around the NFL. Trades, free agency signings and contract extensions took the league by storm as an exciting preview to the free agency phase starting March 12.
The biggest move of the day was the Seahawks sending star wide receiver D.K. Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a second-round pick. This is only about 24 hours after Seattle sent their starting quarterback, Geno Smith, to the Raiders. The Steelers followed up by extending Metcalf with a five-year, 150-million-dollar contract.
In other news within the trade market, Davante Adams signed a two-year deal with the Rams. This affects the trade market because it implies that Cooper Kupp will be traded sooner rather than later unless the Rams want to pay his signing bonus on March 12. Adams will be earning $46 million over the span of two years in Los Angeles.
After Maxx Crosby signed a three-year, 106.5-million-dollar contract, he became the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. In order to remove Myles Garrett from the trade block, the Browns had to one-up the Raiders. While Cleveland is ecstatic to have their star pass rusher back, it will cost them 160 million dollars over four years.
Yesterday, the Bills let go of veteran linebacker Von Miller. This leaves fans to wonder if this move was impacted by the extension of Josh Allen done today. the reigning MVP got a higher end deal adding up to $330 million locking in through 2030.
The Lions decided to let freshly-traded-for Za’Darius Smith enter free agency today. They made a trade with the Browns to acquire him at the deadline last season.
The Vikings retain their running back and potentially their starting quarterback. Aaron Jones signed a two-year 20-million-dollar deal to stay in Minnesota. In other Minnesota news, they announced that Sam Darnold will likely stay with the team for the 2025 season, although no official deal has been made.
