Two big trades happened this week involving some receivers moving to the AFC East for third-round picks. The Bills obtained Amari Cooper and a sixth-rounder for a seventh and a third. The Jets added another star receiver, reuniting Davante Adams with Aaron Rodgers. The third-round pick they gave away could become a second if Adams makes first- or second-team all-pro or he is on the Jets roster for an AFC Championship appearance. With many other receivers around the league having the potential to move before the deadline, this could really shake up the market.
These two become two of three receivers traded since the beginning of August. Who is the other one? Jahan Dotson was traded to the Eagles from Washington also for a third-round pick. At the time there was a lot of criticism toward Commanders’ general manager Adam Peters, but he looks like a genius now. He got the same return for Washington’s WR2 as two teams got for star receivers.
Did the trade value for receivers drop this much since August? These trades set a bar for how much teams will be willing to give up for a wide-out for the remainder of the season.
Diante Johnson of the Panthers may be moved before the deadline. The Panthers are looking to rebuild and need as many draft picks as possible especially to find a QB. It is almost certain that they will look to move on from Bryce Young this offseason after benching him three weeks into the season. The best way to do this and improve their defense is by drafting as many new rookies as possible in the coming drafts. Johnson is their leading receiver by far this season with 340 yards, but they have lots of faith in rookie Xavier Legette and still have Adam Thielen’s presence to lead some young guys. They could likely get a fourth-round pick for the right buyer before the deadline.
Christian Kirk is in a similar situation in Jacksonville. Kirk has produced 296 yards and a touchdown in Jacksonville and has become WR2 for Trevor Lawrence. Kirk is now on his second team and has had his ups in downs across his six-and-a-half seasons. However, he has proven to be a solid target and above-average WR2. He has now been out-produced by rookie Brian Thomas Jr. which is why the Jaguars will be more willing to move on.
For the teams looking to add a different veteran, they may look in the direction of Tennessee or New York. The Titans may look to move DeAndre Hopkins and the Jets are looking to put Mike Williams on the trade market now that they have their shiny new pass-catcher from Las Vegas. Hopkins has been in the league since 2013. With over 12,000 career yards he may make a case for a gold jacket at the end of his days. He only has 175 yards this year, but would make a great mentor for a team with a young core. Williams likely has more years left and would make a great supporting cast to an already talented group. He is a big red zone target at 6’4″ and could have a strong impact in a new city.
So what are some teams that could have interest in these star targets? The Steelers have been in the trade sweepstakes for all the rumored trade attempts such as Aiyuk, Adams, and now Mike Williams. A team that is a few playmakers away from being great could help their quarterback situation by adding a big-time target. The Chargers may also be interested in reuniting with him. They have been spreading the ball well getting three good receivers involved Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, and rookie sensation Ladd McConkey. Adding a veteran who already has good chemistry with Justin Herbert is a win-win. Finally, some contenders that could finalize their near-perfect roster with another big name. The Chiefs just placed their leading receiver Rashee Rice on IR and while JuJu filled that gap well last week, they may target a guy who can do that consistently.
We could see a lot of receivers find new homes before the trade deadline on Nov. 5. However, like these trades, teams may not get as much draft capital for their stars.
