Robert Saleh finishes his Jets tenure 20-36 without a playoff appearance over three full seasons. Last year was excusable due to losing his star quarterback early in the season. The problem was his quarterback is healthy and they had one of the best rosters in the league to start the season. Their time to win is now with the roster that they have.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will take over as interim head coach who has improved their defense tremendously. Their problem this season is their offensive-minded head coach and their 37.5 million doallar quarterback could not produce. Especially in London in their 23-17 loss the defense held Sam Darnold and the hot Vikings offense to 16 points and 253 yards. (the other seven points came from a pick-six thrown by Rodgers) When Your defense only allows 16 points and under four yards per play the offense need to finish for them. Especially an offense that is made up of superstars like Aaronn Rodgers, Breece Hall, Garett Wilson, Mike Williams, Tyler Conklin, and a top five O-line. When a team has a talented roster but is not producing wins, it always almost comes down to coaching.
So what are their options moving forward? They will likely stick with Ulbrich for the remainder of the season the look at the market of head coaches. If Ulbrich does well, I could see him having a future there as head coach. Otherwise, he will likely return as defensive coordinator and they will look for an offensive-minded coach to coach a newly drafted quarterback. I believe their best option, if he is willing, would be Eric Bieniemy. He took a step back to go from the NFL to offensive coordinator at UCLA. Bieniemy was offensive coordinator in Kansas City for the first four years of Patrick Mahomes’s career proving his work with young quarterbacks. His production there should be enough to earn him a head coaching role in the NFL.
I am sorry to tell you this Jets fans but you’re in for another tanking season. The Rodgers hype train is over. The bright side is there will be a big return of this talented roster the only pieces missing are a young, new-generation quarterback and a head coach that can introduce him to NFL football.
