The drama revolving around Brandon Aiyuk’s future in San Francisco has escalated as he officially requested a trade after finally giving up on contract negotiations. Loaded with talent, finding a team with the cap space and the willingness to pay top dollar for him is the hardest part. Which team will that be?
Between all of the articles and reports coming out, it seems all 32 teams are mentioned to be interested in him. Some are more enthusiastic than others and Aiyuk shows more interest in some teams than others. Here are my most logical landing spots for Aiyuk.
Las Vegas Raiders
Recent reports have confirmed interest between the Raiders and Aiyuk. Aiyuk played under Pierce at Arizona State when Pierce was the defensive coordinator there. The Raiders already have a top receiver in Davante Adams, but he is now 31 years old and may only have a few years left in him. Not only that but who doesn’t want a duo this good? Assuming the Raiders go the route of starting Aidan O’Connell this season, two receivers of this caliber are great for developing a young quarterback. Most importantly, the Raiders have plenty of money to spend to give him the contract he wants. With around $34 million this year and $24 million next year they could promise him a future in Vegas.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh seems to be towards the top of Aiyuk’s list and the team has shown the same interest back. This is another team that wants a top receiver duo as they already have George Pickens. The quarterback change in Pittsburgh makes them an interesting team this year but I do not blame Aiyuk for wanting to play with a veteran like Russell Wilson. This could elevate Pittsburgh a lot as they had a solid defense last year that was held back by the fifth-worst scoring offense.
Washington Commanders
In my bias, this is where I want to see Aiyuk play in 2024. Aiyuk has shown interest in playing with his former college teammate, Jayden Daniels. Aiyuk created headlines by having a video go viral of him talking to Jayden Daniels over FaceTime explaining his frustrations with the Niners. He also recently posted a picture of him studying film from Washington’s practice. It was rumored that these two teams tried to make a deal around the time of the draft, but Washington backed out. Now that Daniels is on Washington’s roster, will it encourage them to make a move? It is also worth mentioning that the Commanders have the second most cap space in the league with around $37 million.
Other Possibilities
Other teams like the Patriots and Bills are considering trading for Aiyuk. They may face challenges due to salary cap issues or rebuilding efforts. The Patriots have cap space but are rebuilding and may not want to give up young talent and draft picks for Aiyuk. The Bills need a player of Aiyuk’s caliber after losing Stephon Diggs, but their tight cap situation could make it challenging to afford him without making significant cuts. All other teams interested seem to fall along the same lines as these teams as well.
His Trade Value
Now that Aiyuk has made it clear that the chances of him playing for the 49ers are slim, San Francisco will not require as much to give him up. Earlier in the offseason I might have said it would take a first and late-round pick for him, but it may come down to which team is willing to give up the earliest single-round pick. A second or third might be all it takes to acquire Brandon Aiyuk.
